Troubleshooting & FAQ

1. "The overlay doesn't appear on some pages."

Cause: Chrome Security Policy

Explanation: Extensions are legally blocked from running scripts on:

  • The Chrome Web Store (chrome.google.com/webstore)
  • Internal Settings pages (chrome://settings, chrome://extensions)
  • Local file viewers (sometimes)

Solution: BackTick detects this restriction and automatically launches a Fallback Popup window instead. It looks slightly different but functions the same.

2. "I pressed keys and the UI closed unexpectedly."

Cause: Focus stealing

Explanation: If you click outside the overlay (on the blurry background), BackTick assumes you want to return to the page and closes itself.

Solution: Use Shift + Alt + Q to enable Sticky Mode. The UI will stay open until you explicitly press Escape.

3. "Volume Boost isn't working on YouTube."

Cause: AudioContext restrictions

Explanation: The page must have active audio playing for the script to hook into the stream.

Solution: Try pausing and playing the video once to initialize the booster.

4. "My shortcuts conflict with another app."

Solution:

  1. Go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts
  2. Find "BackTick"
  3. Change Alt + Q to anything you like (e.g., Ctrl + Space, Cmd + E)
💡 Tip

Some key combinations are reserved by Chrome or your OS and cannot be used. Try a different combination if your choice doesn't work.
